It is rumoured that Laura Wade's original play is based on the Bullingdon Club / High Trees Society of Oxford university. It is an all-male, exclusive "dining club", steeped in vulgar privilege, born of an ancestor's lust for total excess.
Only those with aristocratic links or heritage are considered and in this setting, the Riot Club is at a stage where they need to recruit new members. Two of these prospects are Miles (a more chill, level headed lad with a regular working class girlfriend) and Alistair (an upperclass prick out of touch with the real world and its people, wanting to prove himself).
What seems like a fun idea of harmless fun soon reveals itself as a cancerous blight of irresponsibility through privilege, leading to the new recruits' first dinner event resulting in extreme excess, humiliation, vandalism and violence. Morality and strength of character harshly called into question.
An infuriating reality brought out by this is the knowledge that most of these entitled, self-centered toffs go on to important positions from barristers to the highest office, not always answering to consequences.
